Man is always on the fast track, a go-getter with targets, schedules and deadlines. Definitely, more so in this modern age. Stress and strain takes the toll of man’s health. This has been marked clearly by the increase in stress related diseases like heart ailments and diabetes, though the main causes are heredity and obesity. Diet plays a major role in the insulin and non-insulin dependent diabetes. Diabetic diets aim to restrict carbohydrate intake, while meeting normal needs for protein and providing just sufficient energy to maintain normal weight in adults and to allow for growth in children. The diabetic’s diet attempts to diminish the effects of the disease by maintaining a normal metabolic state and leading a life with minimal complications. The main goal of the diabetic’s diet is to achieve normal blood glucose levels, thereby minimizing the hazardous hyperglycaemia as well as hypolgycaemia. A high fibre and a low fat diet is recommended for diabetic people. More of raw vegetables in the diet is good. Since heredity is one of the main reasons for diabetes in the family, the diet recommended for the diabetic will the be beneficial to other members of the family, because diet control can postpone, if not totally avoid the onset of the disease in the other members. Fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, banana stem, raddish, carrots,
unrefined cereals and flour have high fibre content.
